Young European Associated researchers (YEAR) workshop
Sustainable development, a focus for research?
Sustainable development is talked about a great deal. But is it correctly used?
Does everyone know what it means? As researchers we must help to rethink our consumption and production patterns.
We must also seek integration between different fields, a path of ‘growth’ with respect for nature, with respect for, and in collaboration with others.
YEAR is the ideal platform to bring young creative minds from all over Europe to discuss various facets associated with this much used term “sustainable development”.
The goal of the workshop is to give young researchers (<10 years experience) a sense of:
- what sustainable development is all about
- how sustainability has changed the focus of research in research and technology organizations And,
- how our research can help attain a sustainable industry and society
A series of answer to these questions is provided by some key lectures, followed by a case study and a a great deal of networking possibilities.

Open Window on materials innovation in Flanders |
Date: Wednesday, April 21, 2010
Time: 09:00
Location: Meeting room Simon Stevin

EUREKA |
Date: Wednesday, April 21, 2010
Time: 14:00
Location: Meeting room Strauss
Organizer: Jan Meneve – EUREKA
EUREKA in action: from resolving friction and wear problems towards surface engineering for sustainable production and products.
The EUREKA ENIWEP Action ran in the period 2005-2009.
ENIWEP focused on (nano)tribology, the science and technology that deals with friction and wear issues, thereby reducing energy losses in mechanical contacts like engines and machines. The potential thereby is enormous, as friction is a major consumer of energy: about one third of all energy used in industrial countries goes to overcome friction!
The outcome of this EUREKA network project is positive: 15 research projects have been set-up, and there are another 18 projects in the pipe-line.
Meanwhile, a follow-up EUREKA Action focusing on Surface engineering for sustainable production and products – E!-SURF, for the period 2010-2014, is ready to be launched.
At this event, attendants will be informed about the opportunities offered by EUREKA and the new E!-SURF Action, and there will be time to discuss new R&D projects in the exciting field of novel surface engineering with companies and scientific partners.
Workshop programme:
- wrap-up of the ENIWEP action
- launch of the E!-SURF action
(coffee break)
- What can EUREKA and Eurostars do for YOU? (Jan Askeroï, EUREKA)
- partner presentations & discussion (7 mins + 3 mins discussion each)
- conclusions and actions
If you wish to present, please let us know, before Friday April 2nd, to: jan.meneve@vito.be
There will also be a EUREKA stand that can be used to present your activities and network with relevant partners and companies.
Looking forward to meet you here!

Venue:
Site "Oud Sint-Jan" in Bruges.
Meeting Room Morus
Agenda:
14:00 – 14:15 Introduction of the LINEAR project, general status (Eefje Peeters – VITO)
14:15 – 15:30 Presentation of the preliminary results of the project (Work Package leaders LINEAR)

After the meeting there will be an opportunity for a “meet and greet” with Guido Bartels of IBM, key note speaker of the i-Sup 2010 conference.
Participation:
The platform meeting is organized as a side event of the i-Sup 2010 conference.
This conference on the same venue in Bruges welcomes during 2 and a half days (April 19-21) about 30 speakers on the most recent smart grid innovations.
We very much invite you to register for this event for the fee of 450 € (complete programme).
The participation to i-Sup 2010 gives you or your collegue the opportunity to participate to the entire conference, including the last day (Wednesday) with the key note presentation of Guido Bartels of IBM.
It also gives you access to the LINEAR platform meeting on Wednesday afternoon.
In conclusion: for this limited participation fee you get a lot of extra information (including abstracts and where available papers of the presentations at the conference).

The Flemish Algae Platform organizes its third workshop on “A roadmap for algae in Flanders” |
Date: Wednesday, April 21, 2010
Time: 14:00 - 16:30
Location: Meeting room Beethoven
Organizer: Ludo Diels/Jan Verduin
