Guido Bartels heads up all of IBM’s energy and utility business, which includes electricity, gas, water and waste management companies. He and his worldwide team work closely with clients and partners to bring IBM’s innovative technology, services and solutions to the industry. Bartels also leads IBM’s corporate initiative around building an 'Intelligent Utility Network,' IBM’s portfolio of offerings and capabilities for the Smart Grid. 

In addition to his IBM role Bartels serves as Chairman of the GridWise™ Alliance, a leading advocacy group of private and public companies that supports a national imperative for modernizing the electric system of the United States.  Under Bartels’ leadership since 2007 the Alliance has grown its membership fourfold. He has been a tireless advocate for collaboration across the entire energy value chain that includes business and policy leaders from around the world. Earth2Tech, one of the most respected cleantech blogs, ranked Bartels on its 2009 ‘Top 15 Smart Grid Influencers’ list.

Bartels is also a member of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Electricity Advisory Committee (EAC), a 30 member group representing some of the country’s top public and private sector electricity and energy policy leaders.  He chaired the EAC Smart Grid Subcommittee, which produced under his leadership a report entitled “Smart Grid: Enabler of the New Energy Economy” with practical policy recommendations to advance the national smart grid agenda.

Prior to assuming his current position in January 2005, Bartels led the development of a new business for IBM EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa), successfully capitalizing on the market opportunities associated with the emergence of wireless technologies. During his earlier years at IBM, Bartels held various international executive positions in sales, services and marketing, mostly in the in the manufacturing and process industry segments. 

Prior to joining IBM in 1988, Bartels was one of the leaders of a start-up company which pioneered a new business model in the then emerging personal computer market.

Matthias Kuom Matthias Kuom

Matthias Kuom joined the Project Management Agency at German Aerospace Center in 2002. He is responsible for the implementation of programme-related governmental project funding, including the evaluation of funding concepts, professional project tracking and financial control. Currently he supports the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi) in the conceptual and organisational design of cross-border research funding as well as in the internationalisation of programme activities (esp. Smart Grids). Previously, he was responsible for Technology Programmes in the areas of Internet Economy, Wireless Internet and Grid Technologies.
Between April 2008 and December 2009 he shifted to the position of Program Manager at the European Center for Information and Communication Technologies - EICT GmbH. He initiated, acquired and managed the leading R&D project in the field of Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) for the elderly in Germany in cooperation with industrial R&D labs, universities and institutes. His support helped the Institute win the prestigious European competition for the Knowledge and Innovation Community (KIC) in ICT as part of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT). He was responsible for financial reporting and accounting and contributed to the company’s review of strategy and business model.
Prior to joining DLR, Kuom managed the implementation of e-health solutions at T-Systems – including portal technologies, interfaces with an electronic health record and pervasive end-user assistance systems. He designed an R&D project (in cooperation with well-known hospitals and clinics in Germany) for a tele-medicine solution which provided support for stroke sufferers during their rehabilitation process.
Later he led the creation of an information and entertainment solution based on voice portal technologies, guaranteeing the target market, elderly customers, barrier-free access. Kuom was also engaged in the company’s e-health Strategy implementation and supported the Head of Marketing Strategy and Planning in business process re-engineering.

Earlier in his career, Matthias was a scientist in the ICT Media and Communication Group at the Institute for Futures Studies and Technology Assessment.

John Scott joined KEMA Consulting early in 2009, having previously been the Technical Director for Ofgem, the British gas and electricity regulator.

Earlier in his career John was Director of Engineering for National Grid Company in the UK and has a background in electricity distribution and transmission.
In his present role he has a lead responsibility for Network Innovation. This area of work includes Smart Grids and their development in Europe, the USA and beyond.

In support of concrete developments, his focus goes beyond technology and includes commercial, regulatory and management aspects of innovation on networks.

John is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering & Technology, the IET, and a member of their Energy Sector Panel. He is also a Visiting Professor at the University of Bath, UK.

Guenter Eckardt Guenter Eckardt

Eckardt Günther has an engineering degree in material sciences at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg.

Günther began his career at Siemens in 1994 in Process Automation Solutions for the Glass Industry in Karlsruhe.

In 1999, he became head of global business development process automation systems and solutions in Nuremberg.
In 2003, Guenther transferred to Siemens Energy&Automation Inc., heading the low voltage busway system business in Spartanburg, SC.
In 2005 Günther took over Global Marketing for Energy Automation at Siemens Power Transmission & Distribution in Nuremberg.

Since December 1st 2008, Günther is VP for Smart Grids in the Energy Automation Business Unit of the Siemens Energy Sector.
